Recommendations
-
La Guajira is located in the northernmost point of Colombia, the average temperatures range between
29 and 34 degrees with a maximum up to 40 degrees. It is recommended that you bring light and
comfortable clothes, preferably of cotton: shorts, flannels, sandals, tennis shoes, towels and toilet
implements and drinks for hydration. We recommend using sunscreen and other accessories to reduce the
impact of the sun such as glasses and hats among others.
-
The natives of the place are expert craftsmen, so it is advisable to acquire Chinchorros, backpacks
and a variety of handicrafts produced in these places.
-
La Guajira is multi-ethnic. The Wayuu are your hosts, we appreciate your respect for their customs.
-
Do not forget to take your respective identity document by hand. (Identity card, drivers licence, passport)
-
The flora and fauna of La Guajira need to be protected from danger of extinction. Some of the typical
dishes of the region include endangered or vulnerable species such as the Turtle, Shark, Iguana, spiny
lobster. Avoid consuming these types of species.
-
By not buying products made from parts of animals
that are in danger of extinction, wildlife trafficking can no longer be a business that generates
benefits for those who traffic.
Where does this Adventure start?
This Adventure starts in Riohacha, La Guajira. All participants must meet at the Office in downtown Riohacha (address provided when booking). Take into account that you must arrive the day before the Tour to Riohacha or the day of the Tour before 7am, as all participants need to show up in order to start at the same time.
How do I get to Riohacha?
From Bogotá:
You have two options: by Bus or Flying. By Bus it takes about 23 hours and costs around $100.000 COP (about 29 USD) each way. You can take either Copetran or Expreso Brasilia, both recommended bus companies.
If you want to take less time definitely take a direct flight which takes 1.2 hour and costs around $350.000 COP (about 102 USD) each way. Weekends are more expensive, so you can expect to pay up to $400.000 COP (about 117 USD) each way. Depending on the season, you can find cheaper tickets. We recommend the following airlines: Vivair or Avianca.
From Santa Marta:
At the Santa Marta Bus Terminal you can take Copetran company. It takes about 3 hours to Riohacha and costs around $30.000 COP (about 9 USD) each way.
From Palomino:
At the main street entrance of Palomino town you will find different bus companies taking people to Riohacha. We recommend to take Expreso Brasilia which comes from either Bogotá or Santa Marta and stops at Palomino. It takes 1.5 hours and costs about $18.000 COP (around 5 USD) each way.
How is the accommodation, is there electricity service?
The Cabo de la Vela is a wonderful place, which is still in its natural conditions, the huts are typical Wayuu structures, built in mud and in Yotojoro, there you will not find the usual tourist hotel infrastructure, but you will find the basic requirements to make it an unforgettable visit, the lodges work with power plants and the use of energy is controlled, for this reason the energy available to customers is from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
